Resumen

Los resultados de los análisis mineralógicos y diatomológicos de los recintos 3 y 5 del sitio El Zorro (4050 msnm, Puna transicional, Dto. Tinogasta, Catamarca) permitieron discutir si el sitio estuvo inundado en el pasado y determinar el tipo de inundación. Tradicionalmente, las diatomeas se han utilizado en arqueología para realizar reconstrucciones paleoambientales. En este caso, el análisis diatomológico brindó información clave para discutir actividades antrópicas, permitiendo proponer hipótesis sobre la funcionalidad diferencial de los dos recintos excavados. A su vez, se pudo plantear la posible utilización antrópica de un espacio considerado a priori como natural. Así, los análisis de microvestigios facilitaron el acceso a información no visible macroscópicamente durante las excavaciones.

Abstract

The results of the mineralogical and diatomological analyses carried out at structures  3 and 5 of El Zorro Site (4050 masl, transitional Puna, Tinogasta Department, Catamarca Province) allowed us to discuss if the site was flooded in the past and to determine the type of flood. Diatoms have traditionally been used in archaeology to carry out paleoenvironmental reconstructions. In this paper, diatomological analysis offered key information to discuss human activities and allowed us to propose hypotheses about the differential functionality of the two excavated structures. In turn, we were able to consider the possible human use of an area a priori considered as natural. Thus, the analyses of micro remains provided access to information macroscopically invisible during fieldwork.

Abstract:

In order to answer the age-old question of whether a given pot was manufactured locally or elsewhere, some archaeologists have turned to geoarchaeological or bioarchaeological methods such as diatom analysis to establish potential clay sources. In this paper, we highlight the complexity of diatom analysis and illustrate how diatoms potentially coming from several sources may be introduced at different stages during the ceramic manufacturing process. Finally, we proceed to evaluate the reliability of diatom analysis as an archaeometric measurement for ceramic provenance, concluding that it may have a more limited usefulness within archaeology than its current frequency of use would indicate.
